Understanding the Basics

Computer security might seem complicated, but the core ideas are straightforward. We'll cover simple actions you can take to significantly improve your protection against common threats.

• Keep your software updated.
• Use strong, unique passwords.
• Be careful about clicking links in emails.
• PPS, ports - protocols - services : only enable those needed
• Review and restrict app settings
  • Settings > Privacy and Security > App Permissions
• Enable BitLocker (may slow some games down)
  •  Settings > Privacy and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption
• Run with 'Least Privileges' when possible
• Enable TPM and 'secure boot' where possible
• Create a system restore point
• Update drivers from your vendor
• Use Defender 'controlled folder access'
  • Go to Windows Security > Ransomware protection > Manage ransomware protection
  • Turn on “Controlled folder access” and select the folders you want to protect

 

January 27 , 2026 - How to use 'system restore' to flip back to a windows 11 system state of before you tried to patch. I hope you took a manual system snapshot capture just in case . 

 

BEGIN - This option will only work if System Restore was previously enabled on the computer and you created a restore point, either manually or automatically.

1. Open Start.

2. Search for Create a restore point, and click the top result to open the System Properties page.

3. Click the System Restore button.

4. Click the Next button.

5. Select the restore point dated before KB5074109 was installed on the computer.

6. 1. (Optional) Click the "Scan for affected programs" button to view the apps that will be removed through this process.

   2. Click the Next button.

   3. Click the Finish button.

   Once you complete the steps, the restore point will apply, returning the device to the previous good working state before the update was installed. If one or more apps are affected, you will have to reinstall them manually.
